While every care is taken to recommend safe routes and places to visit, hill walking and scrambling can be hazardous activities, with uneven surfaces, the danger of falling and changeable weather leading to a risk of sunburn and heatstroke, exposure, frostbite and hypothermia, among other conditions. It is the responsibility of everyone venturing into the Brecon Beacons National Park to ensure that they are appropriately dressed and equipped with an adequate level of experience to undertake the activity they intend. WTBB cannot be held responsible for any injury or death resulting from such an activity. More information, including videos, can be found on our Walking Safety page.

Kevin Walker is a qualified mountain leader, rock climbing coach and caving instructor, who has been running navigation and hill skills courses from The Bear Hotel for over 40 years. A self-confessed mountain addict, he is an enthusiastic hillwalker, rock climber and mountaineer, was a team leader for the local Cave Rescue team for over a decade, and has written many books, including “The Essential Hillwalkers’ Guide”, “Undiscovered Wales” and “Mountain & Moorland Navigation”. His most recent book, “Nature of the Brecon Beacons”, was published by Pesda Press in 2019, and was launched at Crickhowell’s very own award-winning independent book shop – Bookish.
Although he still runs courses, Kevin now spends much of his time exploring, photographing and writing about the lesser-known parts of Wales, particularly in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, with occasional forays into further flung hills, most recently the Spanish Sierras de Tejeda, the Nepal Himalayas, and the New Zealand Alps.
